Best of 90s Fashion Trends: Tough Girls & Gwen Stefani

One of the nicest things about 90s fashion trends was the slightly punky athletic look inspired by Gwen Stefani, among others.  Her look was punky yet fun and girly.  One of my favorite  90s fashion trends was the triangle bikini top with man-tailored shorts.  That, or the short, tight tank top with belted pants or shorts worn low.  Both looks required a toned midriff and slim hips…kind of boyish, very athletic.  Not androgynous but kind of boyish nevertheless.  The key element to not looking like a lesbian was to have perfectly coiffed hair & makeup and dark lipstick or really really red lipstick.

Jewelry  was minimal or rugged if it existed.  Note Gwen’s wide wristband and chunky belt.  It’s kind of a tough girl look, but not a mean look.  And following the number one rule of 90s fashion trends: always incorporate something black into your look.  This was especially true in the first half of the 90s before the 70s craze took over and everything became psychedelic and bright.  I’d say that from 1991 to 1995 or so, you have to have a dark look or you’re just not fashionable.  This went for street clothing, office clothing, and everything else as well.  Even dark hair was a plus.

This is What People Should Look Like

There is no other recount of 90s fashion that’s quite like this one, so grab your flannel shirts and read on for the most unique view of the greatest decade ever and a glimpse into what people really wore.

If you want to learn anything about 90s fashion go get the movie Singles (1992) and watch it.  Besides being a hilarious and brilliant movie, Singles also set the tone for 90s fashion for lots of kids.  It was made in 1992 when 80s fashion was still in full swing, and while most women had gotten rid of anything with shoulder pads by then, they may still have been sporting leftover stirrup pants under neon slouchy sweaters that year.

But anyone yearning for new direction in 90s fashion came out of the theater after seeing Singles and rushed right out to buy some black tights and well…anything black.  It’s kind of a ragamuffin look…stomper boots were also essential.  In fact, you just couldn’t go wrong with stomper boots, black tights, and a short skirt paired with a big jacket like Bridget Fonda in the picture above.

The cute hat was optional to 90s fashion.  Actually the cute hat and oversized jacket were kind of 80s leftovers but there’s always a little bit of overlap as people gradually move to the newer look.

Singles spoke to young people as the answer to how everything should be…men should look like Matt Dillon and women should look like Bridget Fonda in that movie.  Men should have long dark hair and wear sloppy clothes and a slightly menacing urban look to their clothing.  But more on men’s 90s fashion later.   Women should also look dark and urban but kind of cute at the same time (that’s where the tights and short skirts came in).  If I had to put it in a nutshell,  90s fashion is dark and urban, but also playful and ready for action.  Just keep reading my blog and you’ll get it eventually.
